Venue #25: World Cafe Live!

It's FRIDAY! Another successful week of giving all of you some fun and new venues to check out.

We wanted to give our friend Kathleen another shout-out today (especially since she tagged us in a 'Follow Friday') and feature another Philly favorite: World Cafe Live!

Remember, if you like a venue or have any questions/comments for us, please don't hesitate to contact us at BringBDtoEC@gmail.com and let us know what you think! (Please let us know, we want the boys here just as much as you do!)

Enjoy the weekend for those who are enduring the inclement weather on the East Coast with us, stay warm and dry!

Q. How do you get to perform at WCL?
A. A great way to break into playing here is to come out and perform at our weekly open mic, Philly Rising on Mondays. Sign up at 6:30, Showtime 7:30PM. You can also submit yourself or your band to perform at the beta hi-fi Emerging Music Festival, held every August.  Submissions accepted annually in May - more info here.

Otherwise, to submit for a booking at WCL, please e-mail booking@worldcafelive.com. Please include the name of your band, projected draw, history in Philadelphia and a link to your music. Please do not include attachments – if you do, your email will be deleted immediatelyPhysical press kits are discouraged, and no phone calls will be accepted for new bookings. Please note that due to the high volume of submissions, not all emails will receive a response.

Q. Why don’t you book (your favorite artist) to play?
A. Our music department is always looking out to find bands to take the stages here. Please know that many factors affect the artists we can book here, but feel free to email suggestions to booking@worldcafelive.com.

History:

The story of World Cafe Live starts with a coincidence.

As a dedicated concert-goer, Hal Real had become increasingly disenchanted over the years with the smoky rooms, lousy sight lines, tinny acoustics and inadequate seating that have become the standard live music experience.

And then he heard a voice. Specifically, the voice of David Dye, host of a contemporary music program on public radio called World Cafe. On the Cafe Hal heard everything he'd been missing in the clubs: talented artists in a nurturing environment, free from distractions, taking risks and playing their guts out for an appreciative audience.

At the same time, WXPN, where World Cafe is produced, had outgrown its studios and was seeking a new home. And so the moment Hal called the station to propose joining forces was the moment of conception for World Cafe Live.

Hal's company, Real Entertainment Group and WXPN, which is owned and operated by the University of Pennsylvania, have entered into a unique partnership between a for-profit and a non-profit organization. Sharing work space and a common philosophy, WXPN and World Cafe Live have forged what may become a prototype for future relationships between public broadcasters and private enterprise.
