Venue #47: Mulcahy's Pub & Concert Hall (Wantagh)!

It's Wednesday, which means getting over the hump and onto the weekend! But we're excited about today's venue, because while we've featured many different places in NY, we have yet to tackle one particular place: Long Island!

Yes, today's venue is one on Long Island, in honor of one of our team members. There are two locations (and we may just feature both) so first, we check out the Wantagh location of Mulcahy's Pub & Concert Hall!

History:

The Keswick Theatre first opened its doors on Christmas Night, 1928. Nationally recognized as the
most comfortable, acoustically perfect listening room in the entire Philadelphia market, the Keswick was designed by acclaimed architect Horace Trumbauer (who also created the Philadelphia Museum of Art!). Initially a combination vaudeville/movie house, the Keswick hosted such legends as Stepin’ Fetchit, Paul Robeson and Ina Ray Hutton (Betty’s sister) with her all-girl band. In 1955, the theater was remodeled into a cinemascope film house, hosting the area’s premiere releases of most of the big-budget movies from the 1950s and ’60s.  In Spring 1980, the Keswick closed its doors as a movie theater, slated for demolition. The Glenside Landmarks Society, a not-for-profit group, formed with the hope of restoring it to its former grandeur to operate as a performing arts center. It re-opened in 1981 with a sold-out concert by Fred Waring and the Young Pennsylvanians. Over the next four years, stars like Roberta Peters, Carlos Montoya, Theodore Bikel, Buddy Rich, Lionel Hampton and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band graced the stage. The Keswick was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, but the non-profit group wasn’t to meet expenses, and closed the theater in December 1985.

The Keswick opened its doors again in March 1988, under private ownership. They successfully tackled problems associated with older buildings, drastically increased the activity at the theater and successfully established the Keswick in the eyes of the public. During that 15-year ownership, the Keswick blossomed in reputation and renovation. Establishment of a restoration fund allowed for more than a million dollars in upgrades, including extensive updates in electrical and heating/ventilation systems, reupholstering seats, roof replacement and repair, extensive facade repair, and restoration of the original ornamental plaster. The Keswick grew technologically, as well, with state-of-the-art sound and light equipment and a computerized ticketing system. The growth was recognizes as the Keswick joined legendary venues like The Chicago Theatre, Beacon Theatre and Fox Theatre in “Pollstar’s Top 50 Theater Venues.” The Keswick became one of the Central Atlantic states’ most active and diversified venues, presenting internationally-acclaimed performers geared to virtually every taste and interest.

(914) 631-3390

Booking:

Karina E. Ringeisen
info@tarrytownmusichall.org

History:

The historic 843-seat Music Hall, erected in 1885 by chocolate manufacturer William Wallace, is the oldest theater in Westchester County and one of only 6% of theaters in the United States built before 1900. 2010 marks the Music Hall's 125th anniversary and the 30th anniversary of its rescue from the wrecking ball.

The Music Hall was built during Tarrytown's "Millionaire's Colony" era. Notable Tarrytown residents such as the Goulds, Rockefellers, and Vanderbilts were patrons of the Music Hall, participating in its elaborate flowers shows, balls, and entertainment. Designed by distinguished architects Theodore DeLemos and August Cordes who also built New York City's Grand Central Palace and the Macy's building at Herald Square, the Music Hall's facade is considered to be one of the finest examples of Queen Anne decorative brickwork in the county. The Music Hall was one of the first theaters to show silent films in 1901 and was the venue for several national causes, including women's suffrage in 1915. Antonin Dvorak, Rafael Jossefy, Mae West, and Woodrow Wilson are among the first performers and speakers to grace the Music Hall stage.

From the 1930's on, the Music Hall presented first run films. The Music Hall closed its doors in 1976, largely due to the rise in popularity of multiplexes and television, and it was soon thereafter proposed by the Village of Tarrytown that the theater be torn down to make way for a parking lot.

The Friends of the Mozartina Musical Arts Conservatory, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, educational, and cultural organization, purchased the theater on Valentine's Day, 1980 with the purpose of establishing a center for the performing arts. The rescue was a risky one, for not only was the theater located in what many considered to be a depressed area, but it was also not operational due to a leaking roof, frozen heating pipes, insufficient electrical power, and other problems. The purchase and extensive renovations were made possible by Bank of New York Vice-President Stephen Byelick who arranged a mortage, and Founding Board Member Berthold F. Ringeisen who, convinced the theater was important for the community, placed his home and life savings up as collateral. As there was no money available for a staff, the theater was completely operated by volunteers for twenty-three years and Berthold and his wife, Helen, did most of the work themselves while balancing the demands of their full-time jobs as a college language professor and piano teacher respectively.

The Friends placed the Music Hall on the National Register for Historic Places in 1980 and the Music Hall today is a fully operating theater, offering the best in music, theater, dance, and film. With a full-time staff, forty freelancers, and over 200 volunteers, it has become a cultural destination, attracting over well over 80,000 people including 30,0000 children on an annual basis from all over the tri-state area. The theater is an economic engine, generating over $1 million for the local community and it contributes between $50,000 and $80,000 of space to local nonprofit organizations. It is a recent recipient of the ArtsWestchester 2007 Arts Award, was voted the "Best Music Venue" and "Best Kids' Theater" by the readers of the Westchester Magazine in 2008 and 2009, and was honored by the Thursday Club in 2009, a privilege bestowed on a select few.

Concert goers have always been treated to a wonderful experience at the Music Hall due to its excellent acoustics. Notable artists and groups who have performed and/or recorded in the Music Hall since 1980 include Joan Baez, Lewis Black, Chris Botti, David Bromberg, Dave Brubeck, The Count Basie Orchestra, Dizzy Gillespie, Savion Glover & TiDii, Nanci Griffith, Lionel Hampton, The Hubbard Street Dance Co., Kim Hunter, Joe Jackson, Lyle Lovett, Branford Marsalis, Wynton Marsalis, The Preservation Hall Jazz Band, Tito Puente, Bonnie Raitt, Brian Regan, Chita Rivera, Sonny Rollins, Lea Salonga, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, John Tesh, Richard Thompson, Gwen Verdon, Rufus Wainwright, Lucinda Williams, Cassandra Wilson, and Dan Zanes to name just a few.

Several films and commericals have been shot in the Music Hall with such actors as Jessica Alba, James Caan, Matt Damon, Robert DeNiro, Vera Farmiga, Michael Keaton, Keanu Reeves, and Denzel Washington.

History:

The Tower Theater, built in 1927, was opened a year later by John H. McClatchy as one of Upper Darby Township's first movie houses.
Located just outstide the city limits of Philadelphia, the theater thrived in the busy area that was once the most highly traveled route to Center City from the west. In its early years, Tower Theater showed both vaudeville acts and movies.

By the 1970s, the Tower had fallen on hard times. It was then owned by the A.M. Ellis chain and showed third-run movies for a $1 admission.

In June, 1972, Midnight Sun Concerts from Northern New Jersey, promoted its first concert at the Tower, Dave Mason and Buzzy Linhart, a sold out show on June 14, 1972. Reviewer Jonathan Takiff in the Philadelphia Daily News announced in the next day's paper that "Philly Finally has its Fillmore," making reference to New York's famed Fillmore East. Midnight Sun's president, Rick Green, and his stage manager, Upper Darby native Billy Stevenson, were instrumental in adapting the Tower for this role.

For the next three or more years, Midnight Sun's Tower concerts became the stuff of local legend. The Tower introduced America to David Bowie and The Spiders from Mars in 1972 as well as the then-unknown Genesis with Peter Gabriel that same year; Genesis played a midnight concert with a $4 admission price. In September 1974, Bruce Springsteen – who had an early, strong, and long-lived fan base in Philadelphia – introduced the world to his new E Street Band, with Max Weinberg and Roy Bittan, at the Tower Theater.

It was the first time in his career that Springsteen earned $5,000 for a night's work. He returned in early November for two sold-out shows; it would still be a year before his big breakthrough with Born to Run and the attendant publicity. Other regular Midnight Sun headliners at the Tower included Jackson Browne, Lou Reed, Steve Miller, and various editions of the Jerry Garcia/Merle Saunders band. David Bowie repaid his Philly fans by recording his David Live album during a long run of shows at the Tower. The Average White Band's live album, Person to Person, was recorded at the Tower with Atlantic Records' Arif Mardin in the production truck behind the theater.

It was not unusual at a Tower show to observe the following rock journalists huddling together during the intermission and comparing notes: David Fricke, Matt Damsker, Bill Mandel, Jon Takiff, John David Kalodner, together with Ed Sciaky and Michael Tearson from the city's progressive rock radio station WMMR. Bowie and Genesis' Phil Collins would subsequently mention their Tower shows as being instrumental in introducing them to an American audience.

In late 1975, the owners informed Midnight Sun that they were selling the theater to the promoter's much larger competitor, Electric Factory Concerts. The final Midnight Sun produced show at the Tower was 10cc, the British pop duo, in December 1975.

A well-regarded 1980 show at the theater became the source for the video Paul Simon in Concert, released in 2003 as Live at the Tower Theatre.

The Tower Theater happened to be a popular venue for Berliner's Tangerine Dream since they played here 4 times on their North American Tours. Dates include April 6, 1977; June 25, 1986; September 10, 1988; and October 10, 1992.

By the 2000s the theater continued to be active, filling much the same role in the concert hierarchy as the Beacon Theatre in New York City. The theater operates under the Live Nation/Electric Factory Concerts name.
