The Fire quickly established itself as an artist-friendly venue with a passion for developing talented new artists, both local and touring. Since our inception, we have had the pleasure of hosting artists on their rise to stardom, with artists the likes of Tegan and Sara, My Chemical Romance, OK GO, Maroon 5, Jason Mraz, Iron and Wine, John Legend, Amos Lee, Cold War Kids, Rilo Kiley, Bill Kreutzmann (Grateful Dead), Santigold, Damien Rice, and Dr. Dog having graced our stage.

We are proud to host a very diverse calendar of music here at the Fire, with regular shows featuring rock, folk, country, indie rock, punk, hip-hop and everything in between. Most shows we host are 21+, with occasional all-ages and 18+ shows mixed in. Our facilities house FRESH PRODUCE STUDIOS, a full service recording studio on-site that is also equipped for live multi-track recording directly from the stage. Our bar selection includes eight draft lines dedicated to local and regional beers, from breweries such as Yards, PBC, and Stoudt's, with a wealth of local, domestic and imported bottles also available. The Fire strives to create a fun and friendly atmosphere for musicians, music fans, beer lovers, and casual customers alike. Stop in soon, you're only a stranger once!

Venue #48: Mayo Performing Arts Center!

First of all, our apologies for being away for a few days. While we would love to spend every part of our day posting to all our lovely readers, every day life tends to get in the way. But we're here....and ready for another NJ venue as we begin to wrap up this portion of our venues!

We love our community theatres, right? We think the boys will too! And while we featured one in Southern NJ, there should also be one in Northern NJ to share as well! So today, we have the Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown!

Remember, if you like a venue or have any questions/comments for us, please don't hesitate to contact us at BringBDtoEC@gmail.com and let us know what you think! (Please let us know, we want the boys here just as much as you do!)

Peace, Love, & Bonnie Dune!

History:

The Mayo Performing Arts Center, a 501(c) (3) nonprofit performing arts organization, presents a wide range of programs that entertain, enrich and educate the diverse population of the region and enhance the economic vitality of Northern New Jersey.

The Community Theatre was built in 1937 and was once the crown jewel of Walter Reade’s chain of movie theatres in New Jersey. Its success mirrored the love affair between America and movies during Hollywood’s Golden Age. By the 1980s, however, the Theatre had fallen into disrepair and sat idle and hulking for nearly a decade.

Things changed in 1994 when an army of tireless volunteers, armed with a sense of civic pride and limitless elbow grease pulled together and saved the Theatre from its uncertain fate. On September 29, after months of toil, the Theatre reopened as a performing arts center with a gala performance featuring the Kirov Orchestra of Saint Petersburg and Morristown resident and renowned pianist, Alexander Slobodyanik. Many volunteers openly wept as the Theatre’s renaissance finally came to fruition.

Now in its 17th season, the Mayo Performing Arts Center has become one of New Jersey’s preeminent arts and cultural organizations and now hosts more than 200 performances to more than 200,000 patrons every year. Most recently, the Theatre completed its four year, $7 million “Setting the Stage” capital campaign, which allowed for major renovations including an orchestra pit, a state of the art fly-rail system, new dressing rooms and central air conditioning, which allows for year round programming. Additionally, the capital campaign led to the completion of the Theatre’s suite of education studios, which allows the Theatre to offer performing arts education classes to both children and adults. The upstairs balcony was renovated in 2011, with new restrooms, Art Gallery space and concessions.

In May 2011, the Theatre officially changed its name to Mayo Performing Arts Center, completing a three-year transition.

History:

The Keswick Theatre first opened its doors on Christmas Night, 1928. Nationally recognized as the
most comfortable, acoustically perfect listening room in the entire Philadelphia market, the Keswick was designed by acclaimed architect Horace Trumbauer (who also created the Philadelphia Museum of Art!). Initially a combination vaudeville/movie house, the Keswick hosted such legends as Stepin’ Fetchit, Paul Robeson and Ina Ray Hutton (Betty’s sister) with her all-girl band. In 1955, the theater was remodeled into a cinemascope film house, hosting the area’s premiere releases of most of the big-budget movies from the 1950s and ’60s.  In Spring 1980, the Keswick closed its doors as a movie theater, slated for demolition. The Glenside Landmarks Society, a not-for-profit group, formed with the hope of restoring it to its former grandeur to operate as a performing arts center. It re-opened in 1981 with a sold-out concert by Fred Waring and the Young Pennsylvanians. Over the next four years, stars like Roberta Peters, Carlos Montoya, Theodore Bikel, Buddy Rich, Lionel Hampton and the Preservation Hall Jazz Band graced the stage. The Keswick was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983, but the non-profit group wasn’t to meet expenses, and closed the theater in December 1985.

The Keswick opened its doors again in March 1988, under private ownership. They successfully tackled problems associated with older buildings, drastically increased the activity at the theater and successfully established the Keswick in the eyes of the public. During that 15-year ownership, the Keswick blossomed in reputation and renovation. Establishment of a restoration fund allowed for more than a million dollars in upgrades, including extensive updates in electrical and heating/ventilation systems, reupholstering seats, roof replacement and repair, extensive facade repair, and restoration of the original ornamental plaster. The Keswick grew technologically, as well, with state-of-the-art sound and light equipment and a computerized ticketing system. The growth was recognizes as the Keswick joined legendary venues like The Chicago Theatre, Beacon Theatre and Fox Theatre in “Pollstar’s Top 50 Theater Venues.” The Keswick became one of the Central Atlantic states’ most active and diversified venues, presenting internationally-acclaimed performers geared to virtually every taste and interest.
